Lewa Conservancy: A Pioneer of Great Standing

24 km from Meru town en route Nanyuki the B6 Embu-Meru Road meets the A2 Nanyuki-Isiolo Road on an approach astride Lewa Conservancy and Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve. The renowned Lewa Wildlife Conservancy spans north-westerly from the intersection with the A2 Road with its east and north limit bound by the Leparua Community Conservancy in Isiolo County. It was begun in 1983 as Ngare Sergoii Rhino Sanctuary and reestablished in 1995 as Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Its instrumental and far-reaching wildlife conservation projects have umped the complex game of endangered wildlife regenerating and a second chance to thrive.

A multi-award recipient for its conservation model, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 and featured on the IUCN Green List of successful protected areas, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is a nexus of avant-garde conservation ideas in Northern Kenya and their working model has provided a framework used widely in the region. Today, the 250 km2 (62,000 acres) Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, also contiguous with Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve in the south, is home to about 11% of Kenya’s rhinos and the world’s largest bevy of Grevy’s zebra. 70 other species of mammals, like elephant, lion, giraffe, leopard and buffalo, also thrive freely here.

Over the years, Lewa has been instrumental in protecting black and white rhinos, helping their populations recover. Moreover, they work closely with the local folk, supporting education, healthcare, and sustainable tourism. Almost 50,000 people directly benefit from community projects in resource management, infrastructure upgrades, micro-enterprise projects, improved security and much more. Lewa is home to five luxury lodges – Craig’s House, Sirikoi House, Kifaru House, Lewa Wilderness and Lewa Safari Camp. Visitors can enjoy more living options at the adjoined Borana Conservancy: Borana Lodge, Laragai House and Arijiju Lodge.

Kenya has about 110 wildlife conservancies, all promoting the placid co-existence of local people and wildlife in mutual well-being.
