Makongo Viewpoint: A Pleasant Surprise

East of Konza City along C99 Machakos-Wote-Makindu Road is one the bosting launches of Makueni County. 35 km south of Machakos town one commences on a 30 km long jaunt of winding road, steep and plied, twisting and turning astride the shoulder of the hills, providing a great lookout across undulating hills covered by forests and terraces. Makongo Valley’s incomparable viewing point has been well constructed with a visionary touristic focus, and at the Makue or Makongo Viewpoint there is a sheltered resting area with uninterrupted vistas of Makongo Valley attracting joyriders, ornithologists and hikers. A Phase 2 of the revamping project of Makongo Viewpoint project will include; an eatery, tented cabanas, a water-catchment projects, a sports facility and, yes, a jogging trails. Not far from Makue there is choice of two roads. The first (C99) through Nziu and Kalamba gets you to the A109 Nairobi-Mombasa Road at Emali in about 30 km. The other road (C109) through Wote and Kathonzweni gets you to the A109 at Makindu in 98 km.

Flanked by the A109 Nairobi-Mombasa Road on its eastern flank, Makueni County is part of the Lower Eastern Kenya region. Major towns like Mtito Andei and Emali serve as trade hubs along the A109, the former being the traditional halfway stop and rest. Other towns enroute are; Sultan Hamud and Kibwezi. Home to Akamba people, it is so commonly referred to Ukambani – alongside Kitui and Machakos.
