Adamson Bridge

The narrow steel and timber truss Adamson Fall Bridge, near where River Tana rushes in a succession of rapids through a rocky gorge, connects Kora National Park with Meru National Park and Mwingi North National Reserve. It is named after the explorer and reformist George Adamson, well-known for his gutsy effort to improve and refurbish Kora National Park in spite of considerable drawbacks.

The steel fabricated bridge built between 1986 and 1990 is crossed from Meru National Park, the traditional jumping-off place to Kora National Park. It is a universal welcome to the land of Born Free – one of the world’s fairytales on wildlife conservation recounted in the self-same titled bestseller penned by Joy Adamson. Adamson’s Fall Bridge also serves as a useful observation vantage to sight the Adamson’s Rapids and Falls situated about 100 m from the bridge.

Adamson falls has an attractive picnic site with a walking trail has been in existence for years although infrequently used. There is a raised viewing deck, too. The bridge crosses the River Tana – Kenya’s longest – and also marks the northern boundary of both Kora National Park and Tana River County. From here the mighty River Tana forms the natural eastern border of Tana River County on a southbound course to the Indian Ocean. Adamson Fall is open year round.

Kenya certainly has enormous touring resources. There are no less than sixty national narks, reserves and game sanctuaries, covering approximately 11% of the land surface. Each of these diverse and stunning national parks and reserves offers unique wildlife experiences and unique, breathtaking landscapes.

Kitui County is a hidden gem for travelers seeking adventure, culture, and nature. With better infrastructure and marketing, it could become a key destination in Kenya’s tourism map. Known for its arid and semi-arid landscapes, rich Kamba culture, and untapped tourism potential, it is home to many unique attractions, hillscapes, scenic rock formations and valleys ideal for hiking and photography.
