Vuma Cliff: Kilifi’s Exposed Rocky Coast

Exposed rocky coasts are the least common of any of the four coastal types along Kenya’s coast, the best example of it being at Vuma Cliffs just outside Takaungu. It is a unique and rugged landscape, providing both scenic beauty and opportunities for adventure. Vuma Cliff offers a different seaward perspective. Here, an isolated and distinctive part of the coast, extremely irregular, with cliffs of raised fossil reef limestone, is exposed to ocean waves without the protection of a fringing coastal platform. The rolling waves, like clockwork, crash on the cliffs with a terrific thud.

While Vuma is more popular as a lookout, to appreciate this unrepeated oddity along Kenya’s coast, it is also, to the surprise of many, a great place for fishing red snapper. It’s also home to Vuma Cliff Paso Noroeste. Down the coast, Takaungu is wildly different, with safe, sandy beaches, plunging cliff paths, a photogenic creek, to the dreamy village enveloped in the bubble of time and centuries old traditions. Takaungu’s low and flat interior is a curiously empty land, thinly populated, with rolling palm fields and lime-washed houses that are more akin to Lamu than Kilifi.

But the opportunities for coastal walks are also immensely varied and high quality thanks to the area’s unique coastal layout. A walk out to the exposed Vuma Cliffs has many close-up coastal interests, especially of the breathtakingly stunning extension of cliffs. The shore is predominantly composed of solid rock formations rather than sandy beaches. It is a lesson in the geological diversity of coastal-scapes around the world. As you leave Takaungu, the sandy coastline extends without interruption over many tens of kilometres, flanked by wide belts of beach plains, the most seaward of which actively exchange sand to and from the creek.

On account of the presence of Vuma Cliffs, Kilifi County offers the whole range of coastal types: from its fringing reef coast extending from Watamu south to Chale Harbour, distance 150 km; to the picture-postcard creeks at Mtwapa, Watamu, Kilifi and Ngomeni; to exposed rocky coast at Takaungu; on to the low-lying sandy coast north of Malindi associated particularly with the outflows of the River Athi-Galana-Sabaki; and lastly, the uncommon foreshore area between Malindi and Mambrui, best-known for its low-gradient extensive beach bordered landward by horizontal berms, and pretty dunes and seaward by runnel and swash bars.

75 km north of Takaungu, the exposed low-lying sandy coasts are predominant and extensive along much of the coast north of Malindi, where the River Sabaki finally discharge into the Indian Ocean, forming delta plains and wetlands with distributary channels and mangrove stands. Southbound from Takaungu, the coast to Mtwapa Creek has a fringed reef coast same as that at Diani, with the seaward margin marked by a low, flat-topped reef barrier that is composed of debris of eroded coral. From Kilifi, Vuma Cliffs is 35 km southerly heading along B8-Mombasa-Malindi Road. From Mombasa, it is about 48 km to Takaungu.

Kenya is renowned for its stunning coastline along the Indian Ocean, offering a variety of beautiful beaches that cater to different preferences – from bustling resorts to quiet, secluded coves and picture-postcard creeks. Diani Beach, known for its powdery white sands and turquoise waters, is, perhaps, the most popular. Yet, each offers a unique experience, in almost always perfect tropical weather.

Touring Kilifi County offers a delightful blend of coastal beauty, lovely beaches, cultural richness, natural wonders, and fascinating ancient ruins. Whether you’re seeking pristine beaches, historical sites, or vibrant cultural experiences – or a combination, Kilifi promises a memorable and enriching travel experience.
