Gitaru Dam

Reservoir Dams in Embu

Gitaru Dam: Largest Hydro Dam in Kenya

Located between Kamburu and Kindaruma dams, Gitaru Dam was commissioned in 1981 and is the largest-in-scale on the Seven Forks Project by hydroelectric power output. The construction of the Gitaru Dam began in the late 1970s and was completed in the early 1981. The dam is a concrete gravity dam with a height of approximately 30 meters (98 feet) and a length of about 400 meters (1,312 feet). Gitaru Dam’s Power Plant consists of three vertical drop shafts reaching depths of 140 ms into the turbines that collectively gunner an output of 225 MW.

By output comparison, Masinga Dam generates 40MW, Kiambere Dam 168MW, Kindaruma Dam 72MW and Kamburu Dam 100 MW. Contrary to its output, Gitaru dam is the smallest in area on the Seven Forks with a reservoir surface area of 3 km2. The reservoir with a capacity of 215 million cubic meters of water extends upstream along Tana River, inundating surrounding areas. Its relatively small reservoir relies on steady releases from the Masinga and Kamburu dams. During high water level seasons, the spillway gates must be operated to reduce the water volume in the reservoir to ensure the safety of the dam. It is found 8 kms off B7 Embu-Kivaa-Kitui Road, taking a turnoff midway between Mavuria and Kivaa.

Kenya has several reservoir dams that play a consequential roles in water supply, hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, flood control, and other water-related activities. The most famous of these are Seven Forks Dams along the Tana River. While reservoir dams are critical infrastructure projects that contribute to Kenya’s economic development, they are also visually stunning go-to destinations.
