Waterfalls in Bomet County

Tenwek Falls: History, Power, Myths
The 14 ms Tenwek Falls near Tenwek Hospital, set hard in a fine woody verdant setting, is a must see attraction in Bomet County. It is especially pleasant soon after the rains, from March. The falls occurs on River Nyangores, a key tributary of the Mara River, that flows from Mau Complex southerly via Tenwek to the Mara.
The main activity here is walking along its dam way. Occasionally, you can catch a group of daring local divers plunging off the roof a small hydro-power plant into the pool at the base of the falls. The old power generating station was built in the 1950s by missionaries. Also of interest is exploring the caves located below the Tenwek Falls, which once housed the mythical ‘tiondab barak’ or animal of the sky.
Also at hand while is the historic Mission Church and Tenwek Mission Hospital. The Church was completed in 1937 with Tenwek Mission Hospital opened a year later, in 1938. The history of Tenwek Hospital dates back to when WGM sent Trudy Shyrock to serve as the first trained nurse. Later on in 1959, Dr. Ernie Steury and his wife arrived to serve as the first missionary doctor and to assist Trudy.
Tenwek is a quick 15-minutes drive or 8 km north from Bomet via Bomet-Tenwek-Silibwet Road. The world famous Maasai Mara National Reserve is just two hours south of Tenwek. If you want to take a safari while serving at Tenwek, the World Medical Mission and Tenwek Guesthouse can arrange and book your reservation.
