Kipsaraman Museum: Origin of Millenium Man

Certainly! Museums are diverse institutions that play a crucial role in preserving, interpreting, and showcasing various aspects of human culture, history, science, and art. Whether large or small, they provide valuable insights into different aspects of the world we live in. Kipsaraman, sometimes spelt Kipsaramon, is one of six regional museums around Kenya focusing in human history and prehistory, by collection, preservation, and exhibition of artifacts related to archaeology.

Situated at the north edge of Tugen Hills, 30 km north of Kabarnet Town nearby Kapsomin, Kipsaraman Museum is the most significant fossil site in Rift Valley region of Kenya. It was gazetted as a national monument in 1990 following the discovery of a farrago of fossils related to primitive man. It is acclaimed in many spheres of its discipline as an important site in the study of human evolution.

Significantly, in 2000, the ‘Orrorin Tugenensis’, also known as the ‘Millennium Man‘ – named so because the fossilised remains were found at the turn of this millennium – was excavated here. It dated back 5 million years ago. The first remains were discovered in the Tugen Hills on October 25th, 2000, by a troupe from College de France in Paris and the Museums of Kenya. The French and Kenyan scientists had unearthed fossilized remains of mankind’s earliest known ancestor that predate previous discoveries by more than 1.5 million years.

The discovery of “Millennium Man,” as the creature has been nicknamed, could change the way scientists think about evolution and the origin of species. Today, Kipsaraman showcases items from ancient civilizations, providing insights into the lives, cultures, and technologies of people from the past. A replica of the Millenium Man is also displayed. It is hoped that original will one day be returned!

Situated at the end of the Tugen Hills, which provides an exception viewpoint, Kipsaraman has panoramic views of the Kerio Valley and surrounding terrain, making it a an exceptional destination for nature enthusiasts, photographers and history buff. In a county known for breathtaking views, its stunning outlook of the valley, right on its front yard, is unique. The Kerio Valley stretches for about 80 kilometers from the Elgeyo Escarpment to the northern end of the Kerio River.

The regional museums in Kenya offer a fascinating journey through the country’s history and heritage. They look back at ancient civilizations, cultures as they were centuries ago, cottage industries, colonial legacies, and archaeological finding – in specialization or as a combination – to give insights on the past and present.
