Wildlife Conservancies in Baringo

Kimng’ochoch Community Conservancy

Wildlife conservancies are established to preserve and protect the natural habitats of various plant and animal species. These areas often encompass diverse ecosystems, including forests, grasslands, wetlands, and more. Kimng’ochoch Community Conservancy was founded in 1979 by Former-President Daniel Moi alongside Morop-Tarambas Community, to conserve indigenous trees, wildlife and the culturally important sites for the community.

At the conservancy, callers get to enjoy the great lookout of Kerio Valley, and may also enjoy hiking and camping. At the top of the hills is a culturally important site, traditionally used by the Kalenjin elders to carry on ritual gatherings. It is still upheld as a traditional-shrine. The hilltop contains 3 rumpty sheds and a decrepit cross. This heritage offers sustainable tourism, allowing visitors to appreciate and understand the local culture while contributing to conservation efforts.

The Royal Campsite found at Kimng’ochoch, covering 5-acres, is good base for camping and hiking across the Kerio valley to Iten. Indigenous species of red ciders, harbouring Colobus monkeys, are the main highlights. Campers are required to be self sustaining while at the Royal Campsite. It lacks facilities like shelter water and latrines. Poor marketing, or the lack of it, with no contacts on and offline, has not helped either. It is located 51 km from Kabarnet town.

Kenya has about 110 wildlife conservancies, all promoting the placid co-existence of local people and wildlife in mutual well-being. Improved security, better land management, income, employment and support to community projects have all encouraged the epic rise of conservancies unique attractions and experiences.
