Kapedo (Nakegere) Falls
Thundering masses of water, white sprays, fine mists, plays of light, and imposing rocky landscapes, Kapedo Waterfalls demonstrate the mighty forces, beauty and diversity of nature, not to forget that it waters are salubriously warm. It is located within the mid graben of the Rift Valley, 50 km north of Lake Baringo, at Kapedo.
Still untravelled, dared only by the tenacious intrepid, Kapedo Falls, in the back of beyond, surrounded by a wildly romantic scenery, is one of those places you have to see to believe. The dynamic and ever-changing geologic activity has left the landscape strewn with beautiful waterfalls, unusual sights and local myths.
Rather exceptional in that it is fed by warm water from the Kapedo geysers, the extraordinary 50 ms Kapedo Falls, descending in a succession of spectacular cataracts, earns in place among the most scenically-splendid falls in Kenya. Also known as Nakegere falls, it looks out to the stunning Silale Hills. Nakegere in the local lingua means crack, an epithet hinting at the fires miles below ground.
Aside from its beauty, Kapedo Falls is revered as a meeting place for the diverse communities living around it. For many decades now, the patrolists meet here to water their livestock. Remarkably, peace has been maintained here, despite the differences between the fierce tribes – Turkana and Kalenjin – who rarely see eye-to-eye. A trip to Kapedo Falls is well worth all the trouble of getting there.
